Stop the Big Utility Tax – Call your legislator

Thank you for your action!

Will you please follow up with a quick phone call to your Assemblymember and tell them to Stop the Big Utility Tax?

A phone call is very effective at amplifying your written message

1) Look up your Assemblymember's phone numbers here

2) Here is a sample phone message

My name is ___. I live in ___.  I’m calling to ask [REPRESENTATIVE] to support AB 1999, which would Stop the Big Utility Tax. The Big Utility Tax will increase bills on four million households. The people most harmed will be renters, seniors, and people who have solar panels. The Utility Tax is completely uncapped and the utilities want it to increase to $70 or more. Please pass AB 1999 before the Utility Tax gets completely out-of-control. Thank you.

3) Spread the word

Here’s a sample message you can email or post on social media such as Next Door or Facebook.

Action request: Tell your legislator to Stop the Big Utility Tax and pass AB 1999

Ratepayer alert: The CPUC just passed a $24/month Utility Tax on most ratepayers starting in 2026.

The Utility Tax will increase bills on four million households. The Utility Tax is uncapped, the CPUC says this is just the beginning, and the utilities say they want it to increase to $70/month or more. Everyone would have to pay this no matter how much electricity you use.

Analysts say this will increase utility bills on people who live in apartments, condos, and smaller homes that don’t use a lot of energy, and also discourage energy conservation, efficiency, and rooftop solar.

There is a bill in the Legislature (AB 1999) that will prevent it from growing any faster than inflation, and sunsets the entire tax in 2028. I suggest people call their state assemblymember Stop the Big Utility Tax by passing AB 1999.
