I want to let you know about a new way people can use sunshine to power their homes through “Plug-In solar.” Portable solar panels can now be hung from a balcony, set out on a patio, or placed in your yard, and then simply plugged into a wall outlet just like a toaster. From there, the electricity from these solar panels helps to power the appliances in your home.

This new technology is taking off in places like Germany but has yet to truly arrive in the United States. We can change that by passing SB 868, the “Plug Into the Sun Act.”

SB 868 is a new bill in the California Legislature that does two things:

      • Lets people use Plug-In solar panels without paying fees or having to get permission from the utility.
      • Establishes a statewide safety standard for all Plug-In solar panels in California.

One Plug-In solar panel can power a refrigerator, a home computer, and a few lights. Combine a few together, and you’d have enough power to run a window-unit air conditioner on a sunny day. Renters and homeowners alike can hang these off balconies, lean them against mobile homes, or put them in a yard or patio.

Plug-In solar has so much potential, but the utilities want to make consumers go through red tape and pay fees in order to use them. Our goal is to eliminate these barriers, and you can help!

SB 868 is a bill in the California state legislature that would let consumers use Plug-In solar panels safely without paying fees or being required to get permission from the utility. The bill already passed the state Senate and is now being considering by the state Assembly.
