NEM3 LA Times Ad

Thank you! 1,600 people have signed the open letter to utility CEOs

We only had space for 1,600 names in the ad, but fear not! You can take one or more of the following actions to raise your voice and call on Gov. Newsom to be a leader and keep rooftop solar growing:

1) Chip in $10 or more to help us run the ad in the LA Times.

It will cost $30,000 to run this letter as a full-page ad in the LA Times. We have raised $25,000 to date and need just $5,000 more to make it happen. Any chance you can chip in to help?

Below is the text of the letter we plan to run in the LA Times.

“Utilities: We Don’t Believe You

To: Pedro J. Pizarro, President & CEO of Edison International:
Patricia K. Poppe, CEO of PG&E Corporation:
Jeffrey W. Martin, Chairman and CEO of Sempra:

We see through your deceptive attacks on rooftop solar. We know big utilities are threatened by competition from rooftop solar and batteries. Your motives are obvious: You want to protect your monopolies and profits from more people going solar.

But more people going solar is exactly what California needs right now. Families, schools and churches need to save money by going solar. Our energy grid needs to be safer and more reliable with more rooftop solar and battery storage. And California can only meet our clean energy needs if a lot more people go solar.

California loves solar and our progress is too important to be stopped by your insatiable appetite
for profit. That is why hundreds of thousands of us called
on Governor Newsom and the California Public Utilities Commission to stop your plan to make rooftop solar unaffordable. Your proposal to slash California’s most successful solar program by 75% overnight puts the promise of solar out of reach for most consumers.

We hope Governor Newsom and the CPUC reject your attacks on rooftop solar so that millions of
Californians can continue to make, store and share clean energy from the sun for the benefit of every community.

Sincerely,
Everyone Under the Sun

2) Call Gov. Newsom right now: 916-445-2841

His lines are open 9-5 Monday thru Friday. Sometimes his lines shut down. Sometimes his voicemail box is full. Sometimes you have to stay on hold. Please keep at it.

Here’s a sample script. Modify as you see fit to make it personalized:

“My name is ___ and I live in ____. The CPUC’s latest rooftop solar proposal is still too extreme. We need you to step in. California should be doing more, not less, to promote rooftop solar. Please say  no to the utilities’ profit grab, and yes to helping millions of working and middle class people get solar.”

3) Spread the word, however you see fit

Here’s a few ideas:

  • Email people with a request to sign our petition to Gov. Newsom. Here’s a short sample message you can use.
  • Distribute a flyer to solar homes in your neighborhood to alert them to the threat to solar. Here’s some guidance and a flyer you can modify, download and print.
  • If you have a social media account, post a message. Here’s a sample:

The CPUC’s latest rooftop solar proposal is still too extreme! The people said #KeepSolarGrowing. @GavinNewsom please be a leader and #SaveSolar

There are a lot of pro-solar accounts on social media that you can follow. For starters, here are Solar Rights Alliance’s accounts:

Nextdoor is also an effective place to spread the word.  Here’s a sample message you can post on your local Nextdoor account.
