New Solar Action – SunPower

Ask your elected officials to stand up for rooftop solar

“Dear elected officials,

I have solar panels on my home. I would like to see rooftop solar grow in California, and encourage you, as my elected representative, to support the growth of rooftop solar. I look forward to hearing your views on this matter.”

The sun belongs to everyone, but utilities are working to block your solar

Your solar panels are competition for the utility monopoly. And so the utilities are relentlessly lobbying to hit rooftop solar users like you with new taxes and other penalties that undermine your investment and discourage others from getting solar.

Their goal is to make it impossible for you to save money from solar, and ensure that you always pay the monopoly—now and forever.

In recent years, the utilities tried to hit all solar users with a Solar Tax of $700/year. They failed, thanks to public pressure from people like you.

But the utilities kept trying, and in 2024, they succeeded in passing a new, uncapped Utility Tax of $24/month. The new tax goes into effect in 2026, and the utilities have made it clear they want the Utility Tax to increase to $70/month or more.

California's two million solar users are fighting back. Please add your voice.

Over the last three years, more than 200,000 Californians wrote, called, testified, and marched against the utilities’ efforts to kill rooftop solar. These efforts defeated multiple solar tax proposals, and kept the Utility Tax from being even higher.

But the utility attacks on rooftop solar are going to keep coming. In particular, the $24/month Utility Tax is uncapped, and will increase further unless we stop it.

The utilities will be back for more. Let's be ready to defend our solar rights and keep rooftop solar growing

Your voice matters, especially when it is combined with the two million Californians who have also chosen the freedom and savings of solar.

Now more than ever, this is an important time to ask your elected officials to defend your solar rights, push back against the utilities’ profit grabs, and keep rooftop solar growing—for you and your neighbors.
